Restore Biblical Counseling

What is biblical counseling and how is it different from other forms / types of counseling?
Biblical counseling is based on the conviction that the Word of God, the Bible, is sufficient for all matters of life (2 Tim. 3:15-17). There is no non-organic problem that the Word of God does not sufficiently address. The Bible is a book of hope and provides real answers to life’s many problems.

What is the goal of biblical counseling?
There is always hope for change based on the promises of God and the power of Jesus Christ. Biblical counseling offers much more than coping strategies. This hope is found when we understand our goal in life is both to please and glorify God (2 Cor. 5:9; 1 Cor. 10:31).

What are the tools used in the biblical counseling process?
We believe several tools are helpful in the Biblical counseling process. The counselor must get to know the counselee through the gathering of information (Prov. 18:13), health considerations (James 5:13-16), Biblical instruction with application (2 Tim. 2:15; 1 Peter 2:1-3), accountability with and help from other believers in the church (Phil. 4:2-3; Heb. 10:24-25), prayer and practical homework (Matt. 19:21; Mk. 5:19).

Who can come for help?
Counseling is available for both members of CRBC as well as our those in the Cleveland area.

How much does counseling cost?
All counseling is provided as a ministry of the church and is free of charge.

How are appointments scheduled?
Appointments are scheduled by calling the church office.

When and where does the counseling take place?
All counseling sessions occur in the Columbia Road Baptist Church offices.

How long is each counseling session?
Each session typically lasts about one hour.

How long does the counseling process typically last?
The counseling process typically lasts 8 – 15 sessions (weeks).

What is expected of the counselee?
The success of our time together will largely depend on your commitment to apply the truths from the Word of God, as partly demonstrated by your timely completion of any and all homework assignments. We also expect you to be honest and forthright in sharing about the issues that have brought you in for counseling. It is very difficult, if not impossible, to help you if you withhold important information. Finally, we expect you to give us some time. Habits are not developed overnight and developing new habits take time as well. Counseling typically lasts 8-15 weeks during which time significant progress is usually made.

What is homework and why is it important?
Homework assignments may include things like completing bible studies, reading materials, memorizing scripture, among other projects. These assignments provide opportunities to continue the counseling process between actual counseling sessions as well as allow for practical application (practice) of the scriptural principles that were covered during the counseling sessions.
